Just letting you all know.

Lost Camera

It appears as though I have fatally misplaced my camera, which obviously means that project updates and battle reports will be difficult to publish until I can find an alternative.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Mean Green Killin' Machines

I finished some Warhammer Fantasy Orcs up a few days ago and am now putting up pictures of them for all to enjoy!

Most of these guys are Levels 2-3.  The Boyz and war machines are Level 2 while the Black Orcs and some of the characters are level 3.  The Warboss at the top is four.  He is also awesome.

There are some more pictures of models in this project in the Gallery to the left.  Check 'em out!

The Deal with Finecast

Posted by Trevy the Great on May 28, 2011 at 11:14 AM Comments comments (0)

I've been looking at some of the new Finecast stuff from Citadel, and I really can't see what all of the fuss if about.  A lot of people are complaining about the increased cost of the new models and disparaging the increased level of detail that GW is constantly advertising.

As someone who works constantly with a lot of different models, I think that I can talk about this subject with relative credebility.

The first thing that I noticed about these new models is that they are resin, but reportedly not as flimsy and delicate as Force World's recipe.  There are many obvious advantages to this - it can hold detail a little better than pewter but the most important difference is that it is much easier to assemble than metal due to lighter weight.

Now, like I said the cost of these models is the issue that most people are becoming upset about.  When one considers the ease of assembly of these models, the cost becomes less of an issue.  What I mean is this - a standard, metal model (let's call it an infantry model such as a Champion of Chaos or a Space Marine character with a bunch of parts - arms, backpack, may be legs/torso as well) will take me 15-20 minutes to complete when one considers greenstuffing and waiting for glue to dry.  If one considers pinning as well that time can be even longer.

With these finecast models, parts are so light that things like pinning and greenstuffing are not required, and glue should dry to the level that it can hold up the pieces in question much more quickly.  With these changes taken into account, I can see it take at least half as much time to assembly a resin Finecast model vs. an old pewter one.

The actual cost of Finecast is not that much greater than a metal model -  for example, the Tomb King model that is up for an advanced order is, unless I am mistaken, not any more expensive than its older incarnation while Ushabti are actually cheaper!

As far as I am considered, the fractional cost increase for these Finecast models is well worth it for the ease of assembly alone.  While the sculpts are not any different from the originals in terms of the detail of these models, I beleive that the detail is quite a bit sharper and not sullied by pewter miscasts as much (although I'm working from pictures right now).

Anyway, that's my $.02 US on the new Finecast models.  I hope my opinion has helped you make your own! :D

Going Out

Hey kids - sorry I haven't posted any pretty pictures in a little while; its been pretty busy lately but I assure you that I have been working diligently to get projects out quickly.

This is a pretty important announcement and one that I assure you all I do not make lightly.  As many of you know I am a mere student who paints toy soldiers as a part time job, and very soon it will be time for me to enter the next stage of my education.  This means a couple of things:

I do not know whether I will be allowed or able to continue my work as Trevy's Painting Table in the future.

I need time to finish all projects currently in my studio at this time.

I will be trying to offload as many extraneous models that I have collected as I can; this means armies like my Beastmen and Late Republican Romans as well as dozens of Reaper and other models that I have accumulated.

The biggest announcement is that I will stop taking projects indefinitely within the next few weeks.  I don't have an exact date yet, but sometime around the second or third week of June.  If you want to commission me, this may be your last chance so get to it! :D

That will be all for now.

Grey Knights Sale Army On the Block!

Posted by Trevy the Great on May 20, 2011 at 7:42 AM Comments comments (0)

For a while I've been advertising the Grey Knights army I've been working on in batreps and things.  I originally planned on expanding the army, but with GW being a big meanie megacorp I decided against it and am putting the army out for sale right now.

It's still a sizeable force, running 38 models and clocking in at about 2,000 points, all told.  It's also completed to a very high level - 4 for all of the hum-drum infantry and 5 for the Terminator characters.

The most consipucous portion of the army are the 10 Terminators in the center.  Like I said, they are painted to a level 4 standard and including the following models with appropriate wargear:

-1 Paladin Apothecary (converted from the old metal Terminators) w/ Nemesis Force Sword

-1 Terminator w/ Nemesis Falchion and Incinerator

-1 Terminator w/ Nemesis Force Sword and Incinerator

-1 Terminator w/ Nemesis Falchions and Psycannon

-1 Terminator w/ Nemesis Halberd and Incinerator

-1 Terminator w/ Nemesis Daemon Hammer and Stormbolter

-1 Terminator w/ Nemesis Warding Stave and Stormbolter

-1 Terminator w/ Brotherhood Banner and Stormbolter

-1 Terminator w/ Nemesis Halberd and Stormbolter

-1 Terminator w/ Nemesis Falchions and Stormbolter

Backing the Terminators up are 2 Strike Squads, each with 10 members.  They are identically equipped w/ 7 Stormbolter and Nemesis Force Sword armed models, 2 Psycannons and a Justicar w/ a Nemesis Force Halberd.  Obviously they are Level 4 as well.

This little beauty is from the Infinity range of models and works as an Inquisitor or Assassin depending on your preference.  I just really loved the model and really wanted to include it in some way!  She is Level 4 as well.

I love my Psycannons, so to prove it here is a Level 4 Purgation Squad with four of the monstrosities!

To top it all off, the army is led by two characters - a Grey Knights Librarian and a Grey Knights Grand Master/Brother Captain.  Both of these guys are Level 5!

The Librarian is made from the stock Space Marine Terminator Librarian but has a headswap with a Grey Knights Terminator head.  The Grand Master is made from the old Grey Knights Terminator Justicar with a bunch of stuff added - he's got a custom banner to made him stand out as well as a Force Sword from the Grey Knights Terminators kit.

So, there you have it!  Like I said, the list runs about 2,000 points and can easily make a very powerful and flexible list right up to around 1,850.  For those wishing to purchase the army, I am looking for around $500 US because of the high level of painting that is represented on these models.  Feel free to shoot me a message if you have any questions!

As always, if you wish to purchase this army and want to add things as well, let me know!

Venomthrope

It has been brought to my attention that I left out some Venomthropes from the army that I posted yesterday!  This could not go on!

These poor guys' picture got left behind while I was uploading and I didn't notice!  Poor Venomthropies... :(

So yeah.  They're Level 3, like most of the other pieces in this project and they have some awesome scenic bases as well.

I was gonna give you guys a movie too, but it's such a hassle to put a movie into these posts that I can't.

That's not a overstatement, either.  I literally cannot devote the time.  No movie for you. :D

Starship Troopers Tyranids Done!

Posted by Trevy the Great on May 18, 2011 at 12:18 PM Comments comments (2)

So I've been showing everyone pictures here and there of the Starship Troopers Tyranids, but it's been sitting on my table for quite a while.  Now it's done, though!

Here are some awesome Skyslasher swarms from Forge World.  These puppies were painted to a level 2 standard and were all little bitches to assemble.  Oh well, the finished product is worth it!

Oh no!  Pyrovores!  I really don't like these guys in-game, but the models are really pretty.  These beauties are painted to a Level 3 standard with some awesome scenic basing that is included on all of the models.  Check out the acid dripping down their chins!

These are some awesome Mycetic Spore stand-ins by the ever-awesome Wargamma from Mr. Dandy.  These are Level 3 as well and are made out of the 'Alien Seed Pod' models.

Hive Guard!  Level 3 with scenic basing - not much more to say here.  I've never used these guys in my own Tyranid army, but I hear that they're hot stuff.:D

Tyranid Zoanthrope w/ scenic basing.  The OSL on the brain is really cool!

The two kings of the nonproverbial jungle - a Trygon Prime and Mawloc.  These guys' heads are magnetized so that either one can stand in as a Prime or Mawloc with the options included.

Well, I hope you enjoyed!  I am a huge fan of this color scheme and am really happy with how these guys turned out!

Cut Back

Posted by Trevy the Great on May 17, 2011 at 11:14 AM Comments comments (0)

I think that I will be selling the Grey Knights earlier than anticipated with no additional models, meaning that it will be sold with what it currently has: 25 Power Armored Grey Knight, 10 Terminator Armored Grey Knights, 1 Librarian, 1 Inquisitor, 1 Brother Captain/Grand Master.

Let me know if you are interested - this army will probably be available sometime later this week.

Thumbtack

I just signed up to a cool new marketin service known as Thumbtack, which is a free networking website dedicated to advertising local businesses and services.  There is a link to Trevy's Painting Table's Thumbtack profile on the nav-bar to the right, so feel free to visit.

One of Thumbtack's biggest services is system that allows testimonials to be left on a business' profile and read by prospective customers.  It would be totally awesome if any of you who have commission projects from me and liked what they got would leave a little note about it on my profile. :D
